What´s YOUR Passion?

What makes a great dancer? And, what is more important, what makes a great life?

The answer to those questions is relative, as are the answers to most subjects, but I believe we can agree on some basic traits:

  • Living and dancing from our hearts, allowing the music and life to be taken, processed, filtered, and expressed through the heart – that is for sure one essential quality for great dancing and living.
  • Cultivating openness/vulnerability . Not hiding, not masking our true selves, daring to be fully Human.
  • Educating ourselves; preparation, actually showing up to do our work – may that be working in a dance piece, in a relationship, in a dream we wish to accomplish – are also essential.
  • The willingness to learn, try, fall and rise up again; making mistakes and correcting them; the strength and the humbleness to evolve. Those, too, are inescapable traits for great dancing and living.

I could mention other qualities but, right now, PASSION is the one I want to call your attention to.

A DANCER without PASSION is no dancer at all. A LIFE lived without PASSION is no life at all.

Rest assured: we´re all different.

I, for instance, have been accused of being “too intense”, too passionate, too emotional, too rational, too much, too alive. It seems I think too much, feel too much, love too deep; according to popular belief, I feel too much pleasure, too much passion, too much excitement; if I believe, and I don´t, the concept most people make of me, I´m bound to conclude I´m a case of excessive passion. By now, flames are no doubt pouring from my ears. I´m a bad case of “my cup runneth over”. Or so they say.

Note: there´s no such thing as “excessive passion”. You cannot order a flame to shine a little less brightly. It shines as freely and intensely as it wishes or it doesn´t. Period.

I have no idea what it means to be too alive; you´re either alive or dead, but that´s just me, my weird-freak-over the top me.

I know characters aren´t the same. Some of us are cooler, colder, calmer, less interested, less excited, less “on fire” than others. We´re aware of that. My point is we all need SOMETHING that lights our hearts on fire, SOMETHING that makes us want to jump off our beds in the morning, a MEANING or PURPOSE to our lives.

Great dancing, as great living, cannot exist without PASSION, whatever your passion, or passions, may be.

Great dancing, as great living, cannot exist without a PURPOSE that calls your soul into action, whatever your purpose may be.

Instead of focusing on other people´s PASSION, their FIRE, the thing, or things, that makes them move ahead and higher, I ask you to look within and ask yourself: what makes me feel the most ALIVE?

Delivering a fat-huge-conscious-loving & passionate HELLO to 2019!

49509502_1891756564255019_8873569378914795520_n.jpgCelebrating 2018 is a huge part of preparing for the best year of our lives – we cannot move forward, heading for true JOY, if we don´t bow in gratitude towards everything we´ve lived.

This year brought the (physical) death of one of my best friends – Khaled Roshdy -, the growth and increasing success of Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School; finding the Love of my Life; life in Morocco, then in Bali; a major earthquake with a terrifying tsunami threat in Lombok, dengue fever (my man), a fire, the birth and publishing of a new book; a resetting of life priorities and dreams.

I take the unpleasant as I take the pleasant: with open arms, ready to make the best of everything that comes my way. Meanwhile, I keep on dreaming and taking action upon those dreams – lazy bones have never been my thing.

As we draw 2018 to an end, I share a special video on Authentic Egyptian Dance and, ultimately, Life. I´m sure you´ll understand why.

Wishing YOU the brightest, most loving and abundant NEW YEAR!

hand pointingJoana´s peculiar approach to Egyptian Dance & Self-Empowerment

After almost 8 years of a high-profile, extremely successful, pioneering career in Egypt, where she was also working as personal teaching & choreography assistant of Mahmoud Reda (aka the Father of Egyptian Folklore), Joana Saahirah traveled the whole world teaching, performing, and lecturing on Egyptian Oriental & Folkloric Dance.

She wrote and published her first book – “The Secrets of Egypt – Dance, Life & Beyond” – and wrote articles on Egyptian Dance & Self-Empowerment for various prestigious newspapers, magazines, and websites. Aside from writing, performing, teaching, and lecturing, Joana has creared “Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School”, a NEW project which has already brought education and empowerment to hundreds of dancers from every corner of the globe.

Along the way, she observed and guided thousands of dancers of all levels – from beginners to the professionals you know and follow in the international “bellydance” market.

Her approach is holistic – it works body, mind, heart, and soul – and she unites Egyptian Dance technique & choreography with personal development tools that take dancers to higher levels of creativity, power, and success. In their dance, as in their life.

Talking about Modern Egyptian Dance, looking like John Bon Jovi ;)

Dismiss the John Bon Jovi look (not my usual look), the exaggerated hand gestures (my usual body language), the wide-open-fish eye expressions (my style) – focus on the message.

*Here´s what you´ll find in this video:

1. What is Modern Egyptian Dance?

2. Who´s the Mother of Modern Egyptian Dance & why?

Hey, baby, take a walk in the wild side: NEW Shaabi Online course!

Our NEW Online Course “Street Shaabi (inspired by the Maraghanat)
is about to start, with live & recorded classes, at
Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School.
Every course I teach at my school or around the world is special but this theme is particularly close to my heart.
It took me years to even consider dancing to “Shaabi”. While I was performing in Egypt, audiences would ask me to perform the trendy Shaabi songs and I´d always refuse. First, those songs weren´t interesting enough for a professional dancer; second, I was totally biased where the Shaabi music is concerned. Let´s admit it: I refused to “walk in the wild side”, believing real dancers only performed to Classical Egyptian Music or high-quality Folkloric pieces.
As I grew up and opened my mind, I realized there are treasures hidden in the most unexpected places like, for instance, a good “Shaabi” song.
This style, which comes from the word “shaab” (the people), brings a political, social, even religious critic to the table; it allows us to express what is usually unexpressed – rage, hopelessness, sadness, frustration, the darker side of ourselves and life. When properly done, “Shaabi” is raw, real, down to earth and so much fun!
Once I realized that I started digging into the depths of this style and I couldn´t help but falling in love with it. I´m sure you´ll feel the same.

How to create my first Egyptian Dance Choreography – Level 5 of Egyptian Dance ABC & Creative Awakening

warda 1

Egyptian Dance is not about gathering movements and information – it´s about knowing HOW TO USE THOSE MOVEMENTS AND INFORMATION.

See it as a Language (because it is):

First, you learn the letters (simple movements)

Which turn into words (more elaborate movements)

Which turn into phrases (dance phrases)

Which eventually turn into a full story (a dance piece which speaks about the music and your own life).

*

In our NEW Online Course – “How to create my first Egyptian Dance Choreography” -, we´ll bring the words and the simple phrases together to start DANCING. Actually dancing, not just stitching empty movements to each other.

We´ll use the dance vocabulary learned in the courses “Egyptian Dance ABC & Creative Awakening” – Levels 1,2,3,4, available at Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School, and we´ll bring that vocabulary to life with one of the most beautiful, romantic, and iconic songs of the Egyptian Music repertoire:

“Fi youm we leyla” by Warda al Jazairia.

After learning the ABC, you have to learn how to SPEAK from your heart and that´s exactly what we´ll do in this course.

Samia Gamal, one of the dancers of the Egyptian Dance Golden Age, connecting the dots

“Fi Youm we Leyla” by Warda

4. Tips for Choreographing – some of the secrets I´ve learned from the Master “Mahmoud Reda”, the founder of the legendary “Reda Troupe”.

5. How to be more EXPRESSIVE & SOULFUL in the way you communicate – in dance, as in life.

6. You´ll have access to 7 LIVE & RECORDED classes you can view, and review, for as long as our school exists as well as exclusive BONUS MATERIAL created by Joana Saahirah for this course.

On Sensuality (being Alive)

33303010_144765399577788_2042889056764821504_n

A brand NEW Online CourseSensuality in Baladi (out of the box, crazy and fabulous, as usual) – is coming to Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School and with it come a set of subjects I hold dear to my heart.

Sensuality, as freedom, love, creativity, courage, inner strength, passion, and integrity are some of the subjects at the core of my work.

The first, a highly polemic and misunderstood topic, return to our school with a bang.

What is Sensuality and why is it so important in Egyptian Dance and, let´s not forget, in life?

For me, Sensuality is about BEING ALIVE and in APPRECIATION of every gift life´s offering us.

For me, Sensuality is about BEING ALIVE and in APPRECIATION of every gift life´s offering us.

Sensuality is about putting our phones, computers, and other machines aside and actually take a sip of this blessing which is being here, alive and thriving.

Most of us ignore the pleasures our bodies, and lives, provide – the feeling of drinking fresh water on a Summer day, resting after a long journey, waking up with air in our functioning lungs, touching a loved one or/and being touched, a sunset, the sun falling upon our skin, and so forth.

We ignore Nature, ourselves, other people; the simple (big) things in life.

Most of us live inside gadgets, not inside ourselves, present in our lives.

Being ALIVE means BEING in LIFE – your life. Body, mind, heart, and soul. That presence, more than anything else, is the definition of Sensuality.

Ask yourself:

HOW PRESENT AM I IN MY LIFE? Am I letting life slip away?
