Delivering a fat-huge-conscious-loving & passionate HELLO to 2019!

49509502_1891756564255019_8873569378914795520_n.jpgCelebrating 2018 is a huge part of preparing for the best year of our lives – we cannot move forward, heading for true JOY, if we don´t bow in gratitude towards everything we´ve lived.

This year brought the (physical) death of one of my best friends – Khaled Roshdy -, the growth and increasing success of Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School; finding the Love of my Life; life in Morocco, then in Bali; a major earthquake with a terrifying tsunami threat in Lombok, dengue fever (my man), a fire, the birth and publishing of a new book; a resetting of life priorities and dreams.

I take the unpleasant as I take the pleasant: with open arms, ready to make the best of everything that comes my way. Meanwhile, I keep on dreaming and taking action upon those dreams – lazy bones have never been my thing.

As we draw 2018 to an end, I share a special video on Authentic Egyptian Dance and, ultimately, Life. I´m sure you´ll understand why.

Wishing YOU the brightest, most loving and abundant NEW YEAR!

Last note (before the new year arrives) – something to take into 2019:

Talking about Modern Egyptian Dance, looking like John Bon Jovi ;)

Dismiss the John Bon Jovi look (not my usual look), the exaggerated hand gestures (my usual body language), the wide-open-fish eye expressions (my style) – focus on the message.

Enjoy “Modern Egyptian Dance with Soul”,

a bonus video offered by Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School.

*Here´s what you´ll find in this video:

1. What is Modern Egyptian Dance?

2. Who´s the Mother of Modern Egyptian Dance & why?

3. What has improved & what has been lost in Modern Egyptian Dance?

4. What is the CORE of Egyptian Dance & how we can keep developing the Dance without losing that core?

Hey, baby, take a walk in the wild side: NEW Shaabi Online course!

Our NEW Online Course “Street Shaabi (inspired by the Maraghanat)
is about to start, with live & recorded classes, at
Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School.
Every course I teach at my school or around the world is special but this theme is particularly close to my heart.
It took me years to even consider dancing to “Shaabi”. While I was performing in Egypt, audiences would ask me to perform the trendy Shaabi songs and I´d always refuse. First, those songs weren´t interesting enough for a professional dancer; second, I was totally biased where the Shaabi music is concerned. Let´s admit it: I refused to “walk in the wild side”, believing real dancers only performed to Classical Egyptian Music or high-quality Folkloric pieces.
As I grew up and opened my mind, I realized there are treasures hidden in the most unexpected places like, for instance, a good “Shaabi” song.
This style, which comes from the word “shaab” (the people), brings a political, social, even religious critic to the table; it allows us to express what is usually unexpressed – rage, hopelessness, sadness, frustration, the darker side of ourselves and life. When properly done, “Shaabi” is raw, real, down to earth and so much fun!
Once I realized that I started digging into the depths of this style and I couldn´t help but falling in love with it. I´m sure you´ll feel the same.

A bright, NEW, Season is starting at Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School!

New Season at Joana Saahirah Online Dance School

This Summer has been a rollercoaster – a life-changer, a series of tests to one´s will power, faith, maturity.

I´ve been adapting to a new life in Bali; I´ve been through a massive earthquake with a tsunami threat in Lombok – that included running for my life, side by side with my boyfriend and hundreds of terrified strangers who believed, like I did, we were going to die that night -; going through tough, exotic, diseases; internet difficulties which affected my work; coming face to my deepest, scariest, fears, on the ever-so-frightening trip of true Love.

If you could see me as I am, you´d see a naked person, totally vulnerable, and open. Although I´ve been through a lot, and seen quite a bit in this life, I´ve never felt so scared. And Alive. Grateful.

This, and much more I don´t share publicly, inspires my work.

With a NEW personal season comes a NEW creative/professional season. What I live feeds my dance, my teaching, my words.

The Power of Challenges by Joana Saahirah

This was the first, and only, video I´ve shot since I moved to Bali. As everything I do, it reflects Life as I experience it.

Living and sharing what I learn from living has been one core pillars of my career and one of my biggest pleasures. I hope this video inspires you towards a more interesting dance and, more importantly, life ❤

On Sensuality (being Alive)

33303010_144765399577788_2042889056764821504_n

A brand NEW Online CourseSensuality in Baladi (out of the box, crazy and fabulous, as usual) – is coming to Joana Saahirah´s Online Dance School and with it come a set of subjects I hold dear to my heart.

Sensuality, as freedom, love, creativity, courage, inner strength, passion, and integrity are some of the subjects at the core of my work.

The first, a highly polemic and misunderstood topic, return to our school with a bang.

What is Sensuality and why is it so important in Egyptian Dance and, let´s not forget, in life?

For me, Sensuality is about BEING ALIVE and in APPRECIATION of every gift life´s offering us.

For me, Sensuality is about BEING ALIVE and in APPRECIATION of every gift life´s offering us.

Sensuality is about putting our phones, computers, and other machines aside and actually take a sip of this blessing which is being here, alive and thriving.

Most of us ignore the pleasures our bodies, and lives, provide – the feeling of drinking fresh water on a Summer day, resting after a long journey, waking up with air in our functioning lungs, touching a loved one or/and being touched, a sunset, the sun falling upon our skin, and so forth.

We ignore Nature, ourselves, other people; the simple (big) things in life.

Most of us live inside gadgets, not inside ourselves, present in our lives.

Being ALIVE means BEING in LIFE – your life. Body, mind, heart, and soul. That presence, more than anything else, is the definition of Sensuality.

Ask yourself:

HOW PRESENT AM I IN MY LIFE? Am I letting life slip away?

Again wonderful class, I am so lucky to take this course on live with other dance mates. The choreography is so beautiful and dramatic, I will review the classes this weekend and practice the movements, so that I can put my emotions into them and enjoy/grasp the essence of Egyptian Oriental Dance!”

“Thank you for discussing the difference between bringing raw emotions & exposing your private life, that was incredibly helpful for me — a paradigm shift I daresay. Wonderful class, as always. This is proving to be an epic series & I am grateful for all the thoughtfulness, work & passion you have put into it — it really shows.”

Justine Riekena

*

“Once again, thank you for the inspiring classes. Emotions are a special chapter with me. I feel a LOT but it doesn’t always show. So I try working on that. It has to do a lot with the insecurity deep down I guess. And I’ll repeat myself, I love your classes. They resonate with me and in such a kind way.”

Lucie Kupalová

“I received very useful and practical tips for improvisation, physically and mentally. I will allow myself to be more free and enjoy the moment, no more worries what others may think about me. The Choreography is very romantic and beautiful, I am in love with it!! Thank you again for the wonderful class!”

Seiko Endo

“Terrific class, wish I could have been there live today. Today’s part of the choreography features movements that fall in among my favourites, so it felt very good. Now to sharpen & bring the clarity. I must admit that my favourite part of class was at the end when you clasped you hands & laughed demonically while saying, “tomorrow’s gonna kick your ***, so sweet, so sweet.” So very Joana. Of course you know I adore you & I cherish that you bring your true self to our classes, not a filtered public persona. 😉 Looking forward to tomorrow’s additions to Enta Omri (a song I love).”
